1/2 C. Softened extra virgin coconut oil (if your house is warm then your oil should be perfect, just soft enough to mix easily)
2-3 Tablespoon baking soda
10 drops or to taste of Tea Tree oil or Spearmint oil
Pinch or drop of stevia
Thoroughly mix all ingredients in jar and store in cool dark place. Use desired amount on toothbrush and brush as you would with regular toothpaste. Use H2O2 to clean your toothbrush between use.
Coconut oil has natural anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. Baking soda helps whiten teeth by cleaning off stains and the tea tree oil is for taste as well as extra anti-bacteria properties.
Why use, homemade toothpaste? Natural toothpastes from the store can be expensive and contain glycerin a chemical that sticks to your teeth forming a layer that takes many washes to to thoroughly wipe away. This glycerin coating acts as a barrier in allowing nutrients to be absorbed from the food you consume. Traditionally, cultures used oils for cleaning their teeth for the anti-bacterial cleansing agents naturally found in virgin oils Also oils are able to seep into places other “pastes” hover over.

My wife had gotten us both starting to use baking soda mixed with some herbs (the names are escaping me at this time) for gums. I was wandering what you experiences have been with this recipe?
Well I have used plain baking soda before but found it too harsh on my teeth. I like the mixture with coconut oil and baking soda because it feels nice on the teeth and the gums. From using it for nearly two years I find it as an excellent tooth whitener, and I know the coconut oil’s anti-bacterial properties work wonders on bacteria/bad breath. I’m not sure about plaque because I do not have any. I do know that most times if the gums are receding it is not because of over brushing or gum issues but rather the bone structure under the gums are in critical need of mineral supplementation. I believe Dr. Wallach speaks of how the gums will grow back when one is consuming enough minerals.
someone who knows his stuff and can write well equals a great read, thanks
Is it necessary to use the stevia?
You can leave out the Stevia for sure. The stevia is just for taste.
I use baking soda and coconut oil and found it to be very soothing to my gums. I’ll have to try with the tea tree oil as well…
Thanks for the recipe. I wonder if xylitol can be substituted for the stevia. Also, do you find the tea tree or spearmint oil in the essential oils section of the store?
we have a small stevia garden at home and the dried leaves are very very sweet’-:
my bad breath have been resolved by taking a swish of rock salt after every meal–*
the great thing about stevia is that it is also tooth friendly like xylitol sweeteners~;;
What an awesome site; I think I’m in love! I’ve just recently begun making my own toothpaste, and this is very similar to the recipe that I’ve arrived at. I don’t think tea tree oil tastes very good, so I only use a few drops of it just for it’s antibacterial/healing qualities. I use about 15 drops each of peppermint oil and spearmint oil for flavoring and a fresh feeling. I also use 2 TB of Xylitol dissolved in a few drops of hot water for the sweetener. I’ve also begun making my own mouthwash, which is great because it’s so inexpensive, I don’t feel bad about using it after every brushing (and it leaves my mouth feeling oh-so-fresh!)
Hello, thanks for posting this information, I was trying to find information on this topic – this was very helpful.
I just tried this recipe. The taste will definately take some getting used to but the benefits are well worth it. Just wondering how this sets up. Can I store it in a squeeze bottle so the family is not dipping thier brushes into the same communal jar?
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
devlin how about you use a spoon to get at the homemade toothpaste then rinse the spoon? Wash the spoon with soap once daily.
Hey Devlin,
We put ours in a recycled toothpaste tube, no problems (we cut the end off and then clip it with a bulldog clip).
Great Page
bad breath or halitosis can be cured by a good antibacterial rinse:
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% certain. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kudos
excellent publish, we certainly love this amazing site, carry on it
Hey there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
